For over 1000 years St Helen's has been at the heart of Abingdon's life. Here the people of our town have come to celebrate great events in national and local history. Here too they have come to mark the important moments in their own lives - at birth, marriage and death. And of course this place has been the home of a Christian community that has prayed and worshipped here day by day, Sunday by Sunday through each generation to the present day. St Helen's represents the heart and soul of Abingdon.

The building reflects this. It is an outward and visible sign of the continuity of our community. Its unique shape - wider than it is long - is the direct result of the enthusiasm of the medieval Guilds who had such influence on the town and whose work continues in the care of the Almshouses by their successors, the Christ's Hospital trustees. The ceiling of the Lady Chapel, painted in 1391, is a work of great beauty and it is internationally famous. Likewise the splendid candelabra, the Victorian Chancel and stained glass windows, together with the memorials, all contribute to a building that expresses living history.

We, who are the present representatives of those who use and care for this place of prayer and worship, are aware of our privilege and responsibility. Inevitably, however, a building of this size and significance requires continuing maintenance and, from time to time, major refurbishment. Routine repairs cost between £10,000 and £15,000 each year. We need help to ensure that St Helen's continues to be well maintained as a living symbol of our town.
